What is on the ballot on 3 November 2026

Midterms are decided across several different geographies at once, which is why one map rarely tells the whole story.

35 Senate seats

Statewide races - 33 on the regular cycle plus two special elections. A state-level map is the right canvas for these.

39 governorships

Also statewide, across states and territories. The same state map works, with your own party colors.

All 435 House seats

Decided by congressional district. Create My Maps does not currently carry a district map, so House results are best shown at state or county level.

State and local races

Attorney general, secretary of state, ballot measures and legislative races, most of which resolve to state or county geography.

Color by party, or shade by margin

For a results map, category mode is the one you want. Define a group per party, give each the color readers already expect, and assign states or counties to it. The legend builds itself from the group names, and changing a party color recolors every state in that group at once rather than making you re-click each one.

For a closer read, gradient mode shades by any number you have - margin, vote share, swing against 2022, or turnout. Logic rules cover banded presentations such as safe, likely, lean and toss-up, with a threshold per band.

County-level maps, where the swing actually shows

State maps call the race; county maps explain it. The full county map carries more than 3,000 counties, which is where national shifts become visible and where a statewide margin resolves into the places that produced it.

At that scale you will not want to click 3,000 shapes. Paste a two-column list of county names and values and gradient mode shades the whole map in one step.

Forecasts, scenarios and election night

Nothing ties the map to a real result, so the same tool handles a pre-election forecast, a what-if scenario, or live returns being filled in as they are called. Work autosaves as you go.

When you are ready, export a PNG for a post or a slide, an SVG for print, or paste an embed snippet so the map sits live inside an article.

Is the midterm election map maker free?
